America’s caregiving system is reaching a breaking point. Today, 63 million Americans—nearly one in four adults—are providing ongoing care for someone with a disability, chronic illness, or complex medical need, a 45% increase since 2015. Many are doing so while raising children, working, and absorbing significant financial and health costs themselves. At the same time, the paid caregiving workforce is struggling to keep pace: PHI reports that the U.S. will need to fill an estimated 9.6 million direct-care jobs over the next decade, even as low wages and high turnover make workers increasingly difficult to recruit and retain. This is more than a staffing shortage—it is a community care crisis, and families cannot solve it alone. We need new models that surround caregivers with relationships, respite, meaningful contribution, and shared responsibility before families reach the point of exhaustion.
